In the case the hem guide is used with the sewing machine, the sewing machine is able to perform coverstitch while folding the material edge over a certain width (hem folding process). In some cases of sewing a curve part of the material, it may be easier to sew the curve only using the material guide instead of using both the material guide and the hem guide.
