BROTHER Innov-is A65
A computerised sewing machine with 60 stitches, an automatic thread cutter and a hard case. You select a stitch with the electronic jog dial and the LCD shows its number and settings.
The needle threads in one action and the bobbin drops in from the top (Quick Set Bobbin). The machine has a reinforcement button, a Start/Stop button and a speed slider.
It is compact and light (6.5 kg), with an LED light and a 16 cm workspace.
Features
Stitch selection and display
You select a stitch with the electronic jog dial; the LCD shows the stitch number, stitch width and length and the presser foot symbol. The machine has 60 stitches, including 6 buttonhole types (sewn in one step).
You change the stitch width (up to 7 mm) and length (up to 5 mm) with separate keys.
Straight stitches are available with a left or a middle needle position; with a straight stitch selected, the width keys move the needle to the right or left.
Reinforcement stitches and thread cutting
The reinforcement button sews 3 to 5 stitches in one place. The reverse stitch button sews reverse or reinforcement stitches, depending on the selected stitch. With automatic reverse/reinforcement stitching switched on, the machine sews reverse or reinforcement stitches by itself at the beginning and end of sewing.
With automatic thread cutting switched on, the machine cuts the threads at the end of sewing. You switch on both functions with the same key, and they switch off when the machine is turned off. You can also cut the threads with the separate thread cutter button.
Do not press the thread cutter button after the threads have been cut or when there is no fabric in the machine. To cut transparent nylon (monofilament) or decorative threads, use the thread cutter on the left side of the machine.
Buttonholes
Six buttonhole styles: narrow rounded, narrow squared, stretch, heirloom, keyhole and tapered keyhole. They are sewn with buttonhole foot “A”. There is also a bar tack stitch for reinforcing pocket openings and similar points.
The maximum buttonhole length is about 28 mm (button diameter + thickness).
Needle threading
The needle threader threads the needle in one action. It can be used with needles from 75/11 to 100/16, but not with a twin or wing needle.
With transparent nylon monofilament or other specialty threads, the needle threader is not recommended – thread the needle by hand.
Bobbin
The bobbin is inserted from the top – this is the Quick Set Bobbin system.
Use only the plastic bobbin supplied with the machine or a bobbin of the same type (SFB, class 15, height 11.5 mm). Other bobbins may damage the machine.
More features
Free arm and accessory compartment
The flat bed attachment contains an accessory compartment.
Remove it and you can sew on the free arm, which makes cylindrical pieces such as sleeve cuffs and trouser legs easier to sew.
Speed slider
- The speed set with the slider becomes the maximum speed of the foot controller.
- Maximum speed is 850 stitches per minute.
Start/Stop button
- You start and stop sewing with the button, no foot controller needed.
- While the foot controller is used, sewing cannot be started with the Start/Stop button.
Needle position
- You raise or lower the needle with a button, and pressing it 2 times sews one stitch.
- You can also set the needle stop position (up or down).
Thick fabric
- When sewing thick fabric such as denim, you can lock zigzag foot “J” in a horizontal position with the black locking button on its left side, so the fabric starts feeding more smoothly.
- The presser foot lever has two raised positions; raise it to the highest one for thick fabric.
- Do not sew fabric thicker than 6 mm, as the needle may bend or break.
Changing presser feet
- The presser feet snap on and off.
Seam guides
- The needle plate has seam guide markings (upper scale every 1/8 inch / 3 mm, grid every 5 mm).
- The marking on zigzag foot “J” helps you sew about 5 mm from the fabric edge.
Twin needle and feed dogs
- The machine has a twin needle mode; use only the 2/11 twin needle with zigzag foot “J”.
- The twin needle can only be used with the stitches marked as suitable for it in the stitch chart and with satin stitches.
- Both upper threads should have the same thickness and quality; the second spool goes on the extra spool pin.
- The feed dogs can be lowered with a switch, for example for free-hand sewing.

Maintenance
- The user must not oil the machine: it was lubricated at the factory with the right amount of oil, so periodic oiling is not needed.
- Unplug the machine before cleaning; clean the bobbin case area with the brush and do not oil it.
Stitches
The chart shows all 60 stitches of the machine. The stitches include straight stitches (left and middle needle position), stretch stitches, zigzag, overcasting, blind hem (for regular and stretch fabric), blanket, quilting (hand-look quilting, quilting appliqué and stippling), patchwork, smocking, decorative, satin and cross stitches.
