BROTHER Innov-is A50
A computerised sewing machine with 50 stitches, including 5 buttonhole types (sewn in one step). You select a stitch with the electronic jog dial, and the LCD shows its number, width and length.
The machine has a needle threader, a reinforcement button, a Start/Stop button, a speed slider and a twin needle mode. You change the stitch width and length with separate keys.
It is lightweight (6.5 kg) and easy to store. It comes with 7 presser feet and a dust cover.

Features

Stitch selection
You select a stitch with the electronic jog dial. The machine has 50 stitches, including 5 buttonhole types (sewn in one step).
You change the stitch width (up to 7 mm) and length (up to 5 mm) with separate keys.
Buttonhole styles: narrow rounded, narrow squared, stretch, heirloom and keyhole. There is also a bar tack stitch, for example to reinforce a pocket opening. The maximum buttonhole length is about 28 mm (diameter + thickness of the button). For the keyhole buttonhole, punch the round end with the eyelet punch and cut the buttonhole open with the seam ripper.
The straight stitch can be sewn in the left or the middle needle position. The machine starts with the left one, and this start-up setting can be changed to the middle one.

Display
The monochrome LCD shows the number of the selected stitch, the stitch width and length, the symbol of the presser foot to use and the needle position.
The display also shows whether automatic reverse/reinforcement stitching is switched on and whether the single needle or twin needle mode is selected.

Needle threading
The needle threader threads the needle in one action. It can be used with needles from 75/11 to 100/16, but not with a wing needle or a twin needle.
With transparent nylon monofilament or other specialty threads, using the needle threader is not recommended – thread the needle eye by hand.

Bobbin
The bobbin is inserted from the top and lies horizontally – this is the Quick Set Bobbin system.
Use only the plastic bobbin supplied with the machine or a bobbin of the same type (SFB, class 15, height 11.5 mm). Other bobbins may damage the machine.
Reinforcement and reverse stitches
The reinforcement button sews 3 to 5 stitches in the same place. While you hold the reverse button, the machine sews reverse or reinforcement stitches, depending on the selected stitch.
With automatic reverse/reinforcement stitching switched on, the machine sews reverse or reinforcement stitches by itself at the beginning and end of sewing. This function switches off when the machine is turned off.
More features
Speed slider
- The speed set with the slider is the maximum speed you can reach with the foot controller.
- The maximum speed of the machine is 850 stitches per minute.
Start/Stop button
- You start and stop sewing with the button, no foot controller needed.
- With the foot controller connected, the Start/Stop button does not work.
Needle position
- You raise or lower the needle with a button, and pressing it twice sews one stitch.
- When the machine stops, the needle stays down; if you hold the button for about 3 seconds, you can set the needle to stay up.
Snap-on presser feet
- You remove a presser foot by pressing the black button at the back of the presser foot holder, and a new foot snaps on. 7 presser feet are included.
Free arm and accessory compartment
- The flat bed attachment contains an accessory compartment, which you open by pulling its top.
- With the attachment removed, you can sew on the free arm, which makes cylindrical pieces such as sleeve cuffs and trouser legs easier to sew.
Thick fabric
- If thick fabric such as denim does not feed at the start of sewing, use the locking button (black, on the left side) of zigzag foot “J”: the foot stays level and the fabric feeds more smoothly.
- Do not sew fabric thicker than 6 mm – the needle may bend or break.
Twin needle
- You switch on the twin needle mode with a separate key.
- Use only the 2/11 twin needle (code X59296-121) with zigzag foot “J”, and never use the needle threader with it.
- The twin needle can be used only with the stitches that the stitch chart in the manual marks for it, and with satin stitches.
- With an unsuitable stitch the needle may break or the machine may be damaged.
Feed dogs
- The machine has 7-point feed dogs.
- You lower them with a switch at the rear of the machine, on the base – for example when sewing on a button or for free-motion sewing.
- Free-motion quilting needs the quilting foot F005N, which is not included in the box.
Maintenance
- The user must not oil the machine: it was lubricated at the factory with the right amount of oil, so periodic oiling is not needed.
- Unplug the machine before cleaning; clean the bobbin case area with the brush and do not oil it.
